Torrid to close up to 180 stores as it shifts toward online sales

PENNSYLVANIA — Torrid, a favorite clothing brand for plus-size shoppers, announced Friday that it plans to shutter 180 retail stores.

Torrid Holdings Inc. is a fashion retailer specializing in apparel and intimates for women sizes 10 to 30.

As part of its ongoing strategy to reduce fixed costs and boost online engagement, Torrid plans to close up to 180 underperforming stores by the end of 2025. The closures are aimed at supporting the company’s broader digital transformation as it adapts to evolving shopping behaviors.

In its latest earnings report, the company confirmed a decline in net sales for Q1, reflecting the impact of shifting consumer preferences and strategic realignment efforts. Torrid did not release a list of which locations will close, and store-level decisions are expected to be announced in the coming months.

An employee at a Torrid store in Pennsylvania told River News Network that staff have not yet been informed which specific stores are on the closure list. Locally, Torrid currently operates locations in the Tanger Outlets in Washington County, Pennsylvania, South Hills Village and Robinson Malls in Pittsburgh and Belden Village Mall in Canton, Ohio — all of which remain open as of now.

Torrid says its goal is to streamline operations while enhancing the customer experience through digital innovation and improved e-commerce offerings.
