MOUNDSVILLE, W.Va. — Organizers gathered in Moundsville on Saturday to protest immigrant detentions by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), organizers said, sending a message of solidarity and opposing West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey’s executive order directing state and local law enforcement to cooperate with ICE.
The demonstration, organized by the West Virginia Mountain Party, Fights Back and Blue Jay Rising, focused on conditions at the Northern Regional Jail and broader concerns about the treatment of immigrants.
Organizers said the event remained peaceful throughout.
Last week, Governor Morrisey announced that the West Virginia National Guard, State Police, and Division of Corrections and Rehabilitation had received signed Memorandums of Agreement from ICE to participate in the 287(g) program, which allows local authorities to assist in federal immigration enforcement.
