CLEVELAND, Ohio – Ohio voters may get their chance to decide in November 2026 whether to abolish property taxes through a citizen-led constitutional amendment. Brian Massie of the Committee to Abolish Ohio Property Taxes announced Wednesday that the group has met its petition signature goal to place the amendment before Ohio voters next year. But they still need voter help.
The Committee to Abolish Ohio Property Taxes must submit a minimum of 413,487 valid signatures of registered voters by July 1, 2026, with at least 44 counties submitting signatures of 5% of their voters in the last gubernatorial election. The Committee has established a total signature goal of 15% for each of the 88 Ohio counties to ensure that they have the minimum requirement of valid signatures.
The Secretary of State’s office published the 2026 Ohio Elections Calendar on Wednesday.
Pursuant to Article ll, Section 1a, Constitutional amendments proposed by initiative petitions to be submitted directly to the voters must be filed with the Secretary of State 125 days before the general election. Since November 3, 2026 is the General Election Day, all initiative petitions must be delivered to the Secretary of State by July 1, 2026.
Massie thanked all the circulators that have collected signatures, and the Ohioans that have signed the petition to date. He says it’s still important to continue to actively collect signatures to ensure that citizens have a voice in their government, and they convey the message that they no longer want to be just a renter from the government.
Massie added that, “Any tax that can make a citizen homeless is immoral!”
River News has collected nearly 500 signatures so far this summer to add an amendment to Ohio’s constitution that could eliminate property taxes altogether. River News partnered with Ax OH Tax at the end of June to set up local petition signing stations for this grassroots movement.
The number of voters and signatures needed for each of Ohio’s 88 counties is listed below:

You can still sign the petition at the River News locations in Bellaire and Steubenville.
