JEFFERSON COUNTY — Jefferson County once again holds the deed to the former Eastern Gateway Community College campus.
In a special meeting Monday, the Jefferson County Commission began a formal process that could allow Youngstown State University (YSU) to use the former Eastern Gateway Community College (EGCC) buildings for educational purposes.
YSU’s administration will now review the proposed agreement, a process that could take up to three months before any final decisions are made.
The move marks a potential new chapter for the campus, which has sat largely unused since EGCC ceased its operations. Eastern Gateway Community College (EGCC) closed on October 31, 2024, after facing a series of financial and legal challenges that began in 2022. The college had ceased enrolling new students in February 2024 and concluded its final semester of instruction by July 29, 2024. The last graduation ceremony was held in August 2024, marking the end of its 56-year history.
County officials say they hope the partnership with YSU could bring renewed educational opportunities to the area
