Despite reform talk, Ohio’s “hidden taxes” could still hit property owners’ wallets

OHIO – According to Citizens for Property Tax Reform, while Ohio politicians claim to enact legislation to address high property taxes, there are still hidden taxes Ohioans may not be aware they are paying.

“All the while in an effort to shore up Ohio’s government entities that have become addicted to increasing property taxes to the point they are dependent upon them for their very survival, Ohio lawmakers will quietly introduce legislation aimed at silently increasing property owners’ 𝐇𝐈𝐃𝐃𝐄𝐍 𝐓𝐀𝐗𝐄𝐒 without them even being the wiser.”

According to independent financial advisor Tommy Dale Adkins, there are many “hidden taxes” Ohioans are paying.

“𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐍 𝐈𝐅 𝐀𝐋𝐋 𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐓𝐘 𝐓𝐀𝐗𝐄𝐒 𝐀𝐑𝐄 𝐄𝐋𝐈𝐌𝐈𝐍𝐀𝐓𝐄𝐃 𝐓𝐇𝐑𝐎𝐔𝐆𝐇 𝐀𝐍 𝐎𝐇𝐈𝐎 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐒𝐓𝐈𝐓𝐔𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝐀𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐃𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓, 𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐒𝐄 𝐇𝐈𝐃𝐃𝐄𝐍 𝐓𝐀𝐗𝐄𝐒 𝐑𝐄𝐌𝐀𝐈𝐍.

𝐈𝐧 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒, 𝐎𝐡𝐢𝐨 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 $𝟐𝟎.𝟑 𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐄𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐲 𝐓𝐚𝐱𝐞𝐬.

If ALL of the $20.3 billion in property taxes is eliminated, the loss in tax revenue will most likely come from increasing the hidden taxes built into the ORC here in Ohio. We probably won’t even know they did it until we start feeling the pain from the increase. Here’s a list of the hidden taxes as compiled from the State of Ohio in 2024:

In 2024, Ohio collected $116.9 million in Alcoholic Beverage Taxes;

In 2024, Ohio collected $750.5 million in Cigarette Taxes;

In 2024, Ohio collected $2.4 billion in Commercial Activity Taxes;

In 2024, Ohio collected $204.9 million in Financial Institutions Taxes;

In 2024, Ohio collected $330.4 million in Casino Taxes;

In 2024, Ohio collected $3.0 million in Horse Racing Taxes;

In 2024, Ohio collected $10.0 billion in Individual Income Taxes;

In 2024, Ohio collected $531.7 million Kilowatt Hour Taxes;

In 2024, Ohio collected $2.6 billion in Motor Vehicle Fuel Taxes;

In 2024, Ohio collected $45.5 million in Commercial Fuel Use Taxes;

In 2024, Ohio collected $65.9 million in Natural Gas Taxes;

In 2024, Ohio collected $1.4 billion in Pass-through and Trust Taxes;
