University in Ohio Placed on Accreditation Probation Over Financial Troubles

0

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — Wittenberg University has been placed on probation by the Higher Learning Commission due to financial instability, putting the historic liberal arts college on a two-year deadline to improve its long-term sustainability.

The HLC ruled that Wittenberg does not meet its financial management requirement. Students can continue to enroll, attend classes, and earn degrees without interruption.

University officials said the decision was expected and noted that new leadership, improving enrollment trends, and ongoing academic restructuring efforts are part of their plan to regain full standing by 2027.

Founded in 1845, Wittenberg is one of Ohio’s oldest colleges and enrolled 1,326 students in the 2023–24 school year.
