Hancock County Schools Warn of Major Changes as CFO Is Fired; Wetzel County Weighs School Merger

HANCOCK COUNTY and WETZEL COUNTY, W.Va. – Financial turbulence has hit Hancock County Schools. By a unanimous vote, the Board of Education terminated Chief Financial Officer Joseph Campinelli Monday night.

The vote came after Superintendent Dan Enich recommended Campinelli’s placement on administrative leave and termination. Enich would not comment further on the CFO’s termination. The district plans to appoint a new financial director Thursday.

Adding to the financial turbulence — West Virginia’s Department of Education has placed
Hancock County Schools on the list as “needs assistance”… after running a deficit during
the past year.

Enich says residents should also brace for significant changes to school operations next year, citing expenses that now exceed the district’s revenues. Enich says the district could be facing school consolidation and personnel cuts.

In Wetzel County, consolidation discussions are gaining momentum. District officials are proposing a plan to merge all of the county’s high schools into one. A public meeting on the proposal is scheduled for tomorrow at Valley High School, with a final vote expected on Friday.

Both districts say more information will be released as decisions move forward.
