WHEELING, W.Va. — Businesses along Washington Avenue are bracing for disruption as the Washington Avenue Bridge closes to all traffic beginning tomorrow for a full reconstruction project.
The closure, announced by West Virginia’s Division of Highways (DOH), will sever a key connection between WVU Medicine Wheeling Hospital and National Road, impacting daily traffic flow for residents, patients, employees and local commerce.
According to DOH officials, the bridge will be completely shut down while crews carry out major structural work. The project is expected to continue through through October 2026, though officials say the timeline could be affected by weather or other unforeseen delays.
