MARSHALL COUNTY, W.Va. – Marshall County Schools Superintendent Shelby Haines has provided an update on the employment status of several district educators facing criminal charges in connection with the alleged abuse of a six-year-old autistic student.
In an email to reporters, Haines confirmed that the district has terminated the employment of teacher Kiersten Moses, who is among those charged in the case.
Two administrators — Jane Duffy and Erin Cuffaro — remain on leave while legal proceedings continue. The district did not specify whether their leave is paid or unpaid.
The update also noted a leadership change at McNinch Primary School. Scott Varner, current president of the Marshall County Commission and former director of the district’s Career & Technical Education program, has stepped in as interim principal.
The criminal case, which has sparked community concern and heightened scrutiny of school procedures, remains active in the courts. School officials say they will continue cooperating with investigators as the legal process moves forward.
