Consultants to Visit Steubenville as Midwest Corridor Rail Proposal Advances

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio — Consultants working on the proposed “Midwest Corridor” intercity passenger rail initiative are expected to visit Steubenville later this year as planning efforts continue to restore passenger train service to parts of the Ohio Valley.

The initiative, led by officials in Fort Wayne, seeks to establish passenger rail service connecting Fort Wayne to Steubenville. Supporters say the corridor could eventually link into broader regional and national rail networks, potentially including connections to Amtrak routes.

Consultants are currently studying infrastructure conditions, projected ridership, operating costs, and funding opportunities. Their visit to Steubenville is part of a multi-state evaluation process designed to assess community interest and determine the feasibility of the proposed route.

Advocates argue that restoring passenger rail service could strengthen economic development, expand tourism opportunities, and provide an additional transportation option for residents who do not drive or prefer alternatives to highway travel.

Steubenville once served as a rail hub, but passenger service declined nationwide in the latter half of the 20th century as automobile and air travel expanded.

No construction timeline has been announced, and the project would require significant coordination among state and federal agencies, as well as funding approvals, before moving forward.
