COLUMBUS, Ohio — As March begins, Ohio’s seasonal open burning restrictions are back in effect, and fire officials are reminding residents that violations can lead to significant penalties.
The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency defines open burning as any outdoor fire that does not vent through a chimney or stack. Examples include campfires, burn barrels, and piles of yard waste or refuse set on fire.
Under Ohio Revised Code 1503.18, most open burning is prohibited during the months of March, April, and May, as well as October and November. The restrictions apply daily between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.
The seasonal ban is intended to reduce wildfire risks during times of the year when dry conditions and high winds can quickly spread flames.
