The French Bulldog has claimed the top spot on the American Kennel Club’s most popular dog breeds list for the fourth consecutive year, according to 2025 registration statistics released Thursday.
The Lab and Golden Retriever held steady at second and third, while the German Shepherd remained fourth. The biggest shakeup came further down the list — the Dachshund climbed back into the top five for the first time since 2003, bumping the Poodle down to sixth place.
The Cane Corso continued its rise in popularity, jumping from 14th to 11th, while several other breeds made notable climbs including the Great Pyrenees, Greater Swiss Mountain Dog and Coton de Tulear.
The AKC cautioned that popularity doesn’t mean a breed is right for every owner, urging prospective dog owners to research breeds carefully and seek out responsible breeders before making a decision.
