CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A new 100,000-square-foot manufacturing facility is planned for West Virginia through a partnership between Sandvik and Alpha Metallurgical Resources.

Governor Patrick Morrisey announced Wednesday that the project represents a $25 million investment and is expected to create at least 120 new jobs.

The facility will focus mainly on manufacturing rock bolts and resin capsules, products used in mining ground support. Officials said the operation could expand its product offerings over time.

Sandvik will hold a 51 percent stake in the joint venture, while Alpha Metallurgical Resources will hold 49 percent. The agreement also includes a long-term exclusive supply deal with Alpha, while the joint venture will also sell ground support products to other U.S. customers.

Morrisey called the announcement a major economic development win for West Virginia’s manufacturing and energy sectors.

Sandvik Mining President Mats Eriksson said the project gives Sandvik a local manufacturing presence in the U.S. ground support market and will help shorten lead times for customers.

Alpha CEO Andy Eidson said the joint venture is aimed at strengthening the company’s supply chain by manufacturing more mining materials in Central Appalachia.

Alpha Metallurgical Resources is based in Tennessee and operates mines in Virginia and West Virginia. Sandvik is a global engineering group serving the manufacturing, mining and infrastructure industries.
