WEIRTON, W.Va. — Weirton City Council voted 6-1 Tuesday evening to appoint Robert Kolanko to fill a vacant seat on the city’s water board following weeks of public discussion and community debate.
Mayor Dean Harris said Kolanko, a lifelong Weirton resident and educator with management experience, was selected because of his willingness to ask questions and provide independent oversight.
The appointment comes after a previous candidate declined consideration amid criticism and discussion on social media. During Tuesday’s meeting, several residents voiced concerns about the selection process and the level of water system experience among candidates.
Council members also addressed the role social media played throughout the search process. While some criticized online attacks directed at candidates, others said residents were simply using modern platforms to express concerns and engage with local government.
If Kolanko accepts the appointment, he is expected to begin serving on the water board in July.
