JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio — Emergency crews responded Tuesday morning to a serious crash involving a semi-truck and a passenger vehicle along state Route 43 between East Springfield and Richmond.
Initial reports indicated the semi had rolled over, with concerns that another vehicle was trapped beneath it. First responders arriving on scene reported heavy entrapment and requested a medical helicopter.
MedFlight was unable to respond due to weather conditions.
A female occupant of the passenger vehicle was transported by ground ambulance to a nearby hospital. A male driver was also taken for medical treatment. The extent of their injuries has not been released.
Authorities reported approximately 100 feet of guardrail was damaged in the crash near a sharp curve along the roadway.
Officials also said the overturned semi was leaking fuel. The trailer was reported to be empty at the time of the accident, and the Environmental Protection Agency was notified to assist with the fuel spill response.
The crash remains under investigation.
