Winfield School Board Reverses Course, Keeps Graduation Honor Cords

WINFIELD, W.Va. — Following strong community feedback, the Winfield High School honor cord program will remain in place after the local board of education voted to preserve the tradition.

The issue gained attention after concerns were raised over plans to discontinue Renaissance honor cords, which recognize student achievement in various academic subjects and are worn during graduation ceremonies.

Students, parents and community members voiced support for keeping the cords, arguing they provide meaningful recognition for academic accomplishments and encourage participation in challenging coursework.

During a recent board meeting, supporters presented their case and highlighted the significance the cords hold for graduating seniors.

After discussion, board members voted to retain the honor cord system while also moving forward with a new Latin honors program. The updated recognition system will include distinctions such as cum laude, magna cum laude and summa cum laude, replacing the traditional valedictorian and salutatorian titles.

Students earning Latin honors will wear special stoles at graduation, while academic honor cords will continue to recognize achievements across individual subject areas.

School officials are expected to finalize the criteria for Latin honors during the coming school year, with the changes scheduled to take effect beginning with the Class of 2027.
