WELLSBURG, W.Va. — Wellsburg is gearing up for one of its longest-running traditions as the city’s annual Fourth of July Celebration returns for its 78th year later this month.

Festivities are scheduled to begin June 27 and will continue for eight days, offering a packed lineup of activities and entertainment for residents and visitors alike.

Organizers say this year’s celebration comes during a historic year as the nation commemorates the 250th anniversary of American independence, a milestone expected to bring added excitement to Independence Day events across the country.

The weeklong celebration will feature a variety of attractions, including a fishing tournament, 3-on-3 basketball competition, live entertainment, a hot dog eating contest, the popular Oil Can Derby and numerous family-friendly activities.

Event organizers said the annual celebration remains a cornerstone of the community and continues to draw strong support from local residents.

“It’s always been a tradition in our community,” said Dan Otto, co-chair of the Wellsburg Fourth of July Celebration. “People look forward to this every year.”

Co-chair Tom Puskarich said the nation’s semiquincentennial is helping make this year’s event especially meaningful.

“With America celebrating its 250th birthday, Fourth of July events across the country are expected to be bigger than ever,” Puskarich said. “We’re excited to be part of that celebration and proud of the work that’s gone into making this year’s event special.”

A complete schedule of activities is available through the Wellsburg Fourth of July Celebration’s official Facebook page.
