WHEELING, W.Va. — West Virginia ranked near the bottom of a new national report evaluating public school systems across the United States.
The annual study, released by personal finance website WalletHub, compared all 50 states and the District of Columbia using 32 measures of school quality and safety. The rankings considered factors such as student-to-teacher ratios, graduation and dropout rates, academic performance and standardized test scores.
According to the report, West Virginia ranked 47th overall, placing it among the nation’s lowest-rated school systems.
The study also found the state ranked 48th in math test scores, highlighting one of the weakest-performing academic areas measured in the analysis.
WalletHub’s rankings are intended to provide a broad comparison of school system performance nationwide by examining both educational outcomes and school safety indicators.
The full rankings include every state and the District of Columbia and are updated annually using publicly available education data.
