CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A West Virginia woman believed to be the state’s oldest living resident celebrated a major milestone Wednesday as she turned 107 years old.

Virginia Elva Cadd marked her birthday surrounded by family and friends at Harmony at Southridge. West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey also attended the celebration and presented Cadd with a Certificate of Recognition honoring her life and longevity.

Born Aug. 13, 1919, in Nitro, Cadd is the oldest of seven children and has spent much of her life in the Kanawha Valley.

She married George Cadd in 1939, and the couple raised three children. They were married for 42 years before his death in 1981.

During her working years, Cadd was a personal shopper at The Diamond Department Store. She has lived in several Kanawha County communities over the years, including Charleston, Dunbar and Cross Lanes.

Cadd later became a charter member of Harmony at Southridge when the senior living community opened. At 107, she continues to live independently and spends her time reading, visiting with friends and even doing her own laundry.

The governor also presented Cadd with a birthday cake on behalf of the state as family and friends celebrated more than a century of her life.
