Baxter International has voluntarily recalled two medical solutions because they may contain foreign particles, including stainless steel and fiberglass.
The first recall involves one lot of 70% Dextrose Injection packaged in a VIAFLEX plastic container. The product was distributed nationwide to health care providers between July 25 and July 28.
Dextrose injection supplies patients with additional fluids and carbohydrates when they cannot consume enough liquids on their own. The possible presence of stainless-steel particles could cause serious or potentially life-threatening health complications.
A separate recall involves Anticoagulant Sodium Citrate Solution, which may contain fiberglass particles. That product was distributed to one U.S. customer between July 2 and July 11.
Anticoagulant sodium citrate is used to reduce blood clotting during apheresis, a medical procedure that separates and collects components of a patient’s blood.
The possible health effects depend on the amount, size, shape and composition of any particles present in the solution.
No adverse reactions connected to either recalled product had been reported at the time of the recall announcement.
