CHARLESTON, W.Va. – West Virginia coal miner Steven Fields, 55, of Chauncey, died Wednesday due to injuries he sustained in a mine work accident, according to state Governor Patrick Morrisey’s office.

Morrisey issued a statement asking all West Virginians to pray for the miner and his family.

“I’m deeply saddened to hear about the death of one of our brave coal miners, Steven Fields. Steven tragically passed away after an accident at the Progress Surface Mine in Twilight, WV. All West Virginians should keep Steven’s family and loved ones in our prayers.

Morrissey praised the work of the Mountain State’s coal miners:

Our miners are some of the hardest-working, humble, and courageous people in our state. They are truly the backbone of West Virginia. We’re deeply indebted to these brave men and women and continue to pray for their safety.”
