Vital Wheeling bridge closing in 2026 due to structural issues

WHEELING, W.Va. – The West Virginia Division of Highways (DOH) announced plans to close the Schilling Bridge in Elm Grove for replacement starting in the spring of 2026.

The 55-year-old bridge, which connects Elm Grove to the rest of Wheeling, is set to undergo a full replacement due to structural deterioration. The project is expected to last approximately 18 months, with construction slated for completion by the fall of 2027, at an estimated cost of over $1.5 million.

Built in 1970, the Schilling Bridge failed its most recent inspection due to concerns about spalling on the T-beams and cracks in the concrete piers and abutments. The state’s assessment of the bridge revealed that it was no longer safe for continued use, prompting the need for a full replacement.

Wheeling officials have concerns about school bus traffic and student safety with the bridge’s closure. The city of Wheeling has submitted a request to the state for a temporary walking bridge to ensure students can cross the bridge area safely.

To mitigate traffic disruptions, all vehicles will be detoured to National Road and Lumber Avenue during construction.

As the project moves forward, residents and commuters in Elm Grove and surrounding areas will need to plan for changes to traffic patterns and school transportation routes. While the closure will be inconvenient, the DOH insists that the long-term safety and structural integrity of the new Schilling Bridge will make it a critical upgrade for the region.

The West Virginia Division of Highways is seeking public comment on the closure and replacement project, with community feedback expected to help inform the final details of the construction and detour plans.
