WEIRTON, W.Va. — Weirton Area Water Board customers should plan for a six-hour shutdown of water service scheduled for 7 a.m. Wednesday. Board management says they have to shut down water service for needed water plant upgrades.
The Weirton water upgrades come on the heels of a Friday order by the West Virginia
Public Service Commission giving the water board 90 days to submit a corrective action
plan.
The PSC wants several issues addressed including replacement of old cast
iron and galvanized water pipes within five years, creation of a leak detection and repair
system and develop crisis communication plans.
The commission’s investigation stems from a wave of water line breaks and outages that struck the city between December and March.
The PSC officially opened its investigation into the incidents and the city’s handling of them in late February. The corrective plan due within the next 90 days will be subject to further review by the commission.
