CHARLESTON, W.Va. – West Virginia schools are receiving 2,500 donated signs with the national motto “In God We Trust” to meet requirements of a new state law.
Senate Bill 280, sponsored by Sen. Mike Azinger, R-Wood, requires all public schools and universities to display the motto in a prominent place. The law, signed by Gov. Patrick Morrisey in April, took effect July 11 but included no funding for the signs.
The donated posters, provided by Patriot Mobile and First Liberty Institute, will now be distributed statewide.
At a news conference earlier this week, Morrisey said the displays promote civics and faith, while Senate President Randy Smith, R-Preston, said society declined when “God was taken out of schools.”
First Liberty representatives also urged lawmakers to consider legislation requiring the Ten Commandments in classrooms and at the state Capitol, though similar efforts in past years have failed.
