PENNSYLVANIA — Sheetz stores across the region are encouraging customers to use cards and digital payment options as the nation faces an ongoing shortage of pennies.
A sign recently posted at a south-central Pennsylvania location explains that the U.S. Mint is ending penny production, since making each coin now costs more than it’s worth. That move has led to limited change supplies at registers across the country.
The store is asking shoppers to consider three simple alternatives:
- Pay electronically using debit or credit cards, SheetzGo!, or the company’s mobile app.
- Round up purchases to the nearest dollar to benefit the Support Local Kidz charity program.
- Or trade in one dollar’s worth of spare pennies for a free self-serve drink.
A Look at Sheetz
Founded in Altoona, Pennsylvania, in 1952, Sheetz has grown from a single family-run shop into a multi-state convenience store chain known for quick service, made-to-order meals, and around-the-clock operations. The company’s lighthearted “Why the Sheetz Not?” slogan reflects its focus on convenience, innovation, and community involvement.
As the penny fades from circulation, Sheetz continues to adapt — finding creative ways to keep transactions smooth while supporting local causes.
