Marshall County Assessor Resigns, Pleads Guilty to $117K Embezzlement Scheme

MOUNDSVILLE, W.Va. — Marshall County Assessor Eric Buzzard resigned from office Wednesday after pleading guilty to felony charges of embezzlement and conspiracy in Marshall County Circuit Court.

As part of a plea agreement, Buzzard admitted to embezzling more than $117,000 from the county through a car sales kickback scheme. Special Prosecutor Shawn Turak recommended a prison sentence of two to 15 years and noted that Buzzard has agreed to pay $67,000 in restitution.

Circuit Judge Jeffrey Cramer accepted the plea but has not yet scheduled a sentencing date.

Buzzard’s resignation took effect immediately following his court appearance.
