West Virginia Public School Enrollment Continues to Decline

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — West Virginia’s public school enrollment continues to decline, according to an update presented to the state Board of Education during its regular meeting Wednesday.

Across all 55 counties, just under 235,000 students are currently enrolled in the public school system. Of those, nearly 2% are enrolled in charter schools, with most choosing the state’s two online virtual charter options.

State officials noted that since 2015, West Virginia’s public school enrollment has dropped by more than 15%, reflecting ongoing population decline and other demographic shifts across the Mountain State.
