Firearms Deer Season Opens in West Virginia, Quarter-Million Hunters Expected

WEST VIRGINIA – Firearms deer hunting season opens today across West Virginia, and state officials say more than a quarter of a million hunters are expected to head into the woods in hopes of putting venison on the table.

According to the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, opening week remains the busiest and most productive time of the season. Historically, hunters harvest about 80 percent of their deer within the first three days.

The season runs through December 7, giving hunters just under two weeks to participate.

Wildlife officials are reminding hunters to review current regulations, wear blaze orange for safety, and report their harvests through the state’s electronic game check system.
