Columbiana County, Ohio – The Ohio Rail Development Commission has approved more than $7 million for a major grade separation project along Norfolk Southern’s rail line in Salem, Columbiana County.

The project targets the busy Lincoln Avenue grade crossing, where more than 40 freight trains and two daily Amtrak passenger trains pass through the city. Local officials say the high traffic volume has long caused safety concerns and frequent delays for drivers.

The approved funding will support the construction of a grade separation — typically an overpass or underpass — designed to eliminate the at-grade intersection between rail and roadway. Rail Development Commission leaders say the investment will improve safety, reduce congestion, and enhance emergency response times in the area.

Additional details about the construction timeline and design plans are expected to be announced as the project moves into its next phase.
