Ice Jam Flood Risk Increases Across Ohio Valley As Temperatures Warm

OHIO VALLEY – As winter conditions begin to ease across the Ohio Valley, emergency officials warn that shifting ice in creeks and streams is increasing the risk of flooding due to ice jams which can form when large chunks of breaking ice collect in narrow areas of waterways, blocking normal flow and causing water levels to rise quickly.

Rapid warmups following prolonged freezing temperatures significantly increase the risk, especially when melting snow combines with rainfall.

Residents living near creeks and streams are encouraged to monitor water levels closely and watch for warning signs such as water backing up in unusual areas or large pieces of ice collecting in one location.

Authorities also urge drivers to use caution in flood-prone areas and to never attempt to drive through flooded roadways. Remember, turn around, don’t drown. Residents who observe flooding are encouraged to contact emergency services.
