CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Governor Patrick Morrisey has officially launched West Virginia’s celebration of America’s 250th anniversary, announcing a four-day patriotic event set for July 2-5 on the State Capitol Complex in Charleston.
Dubbed the Capital City Celebration, the family-friendly event will coincide with the Charleston Sternwheel Regatta and feature what organizers say will be one of the biggest attractions of the summer — the America 250 Wheel, billed as the world’s tallest portable Ferris wheel.
Standing 230 feet tall, the massive attraction will offer free rides and panoramic views stretching up to 14 miles across the Capital City. The wheel includes 45 gondolas, each representing a U.S. president, and can accommodate up to 1,600 riders per hour. At night, the wheel will light up the Charleston skyline with a 256-color LED display.
“As we approach America’s 250th anniversary, West Virginia is proud to host a celebration that honors our nation’s history while bringing families and communities together,” Governor Morrisey said.
In addition to the giant Ferris wheel, the Capitol Complex will feature:
- Inflatables and family games
- Food vendors
- Capitol tours
- Living history experiences
- Free shuttle service connecting the Capitol Complex and Sternwheel Regatta festivities
Each evening will wrap up with a 3D light projection show on the State Capitol, inspired by displays seen on the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C., highlighting key moments in both American and West Virginia history.
Governor Morrisey also announced the creation of the Governor’s America 250 Task Force, a group of state leaders, educators, and community members tasked with helping guide the statewide commemoration.
West Virginia Tourism Secretary Chelsea Ruby said the celebration is designed to deliver “larger-than-life” experiences for families visiting Charleston during the July Fourth holiday weekend.
Additional information, updates, and event details are available through West Virginia 250 organizers.
