CAMBRIDGE, Ohio — The Cambridge City School District has selected a new leader for Cambridge High School while also celebrating academic gains made by students at the district’s primary school.

During the June Board of Education meeting, members approved Jeff Wheeler as the next principal of Cambridge High School. Wheeler, who has served as assistant principal and athletic director since 2024, will step into the position following the resignation of longtime principal Bob Baier.

District officials expressed confidence in Wheeler’s leadership and said they expect a smooth transition as he takes on the new role.

The meeting also included an update from Cambridge Primary School Principal Kurt Ware, who outlined the school’s continued focus on strengthening student achievement through staff development, targeted instruction and academic intervention programs.

According to district data, the number of students reading at or above grade level increased by 27 percent between fall 2025 and spring 2026. Math performance also improved, with a 20 percent increase in students meeting or exceeding grade-level expectations.

Ware credited the progress to the commitment of teachers and staff, as well as the school’s investment in instructional support and evidence-based learning strategies.

Board members also approved placing a five-year emergency operating levy renewal on the November ballot. School officials said the renewal would not increase taxes and would continue funding essential district operations.

Additional approvals included insurance renewals, educational service agreements, student travel requests and a number of personnel and coaching appointments.

The next meeting of the Cambridge Board of Education is scheduled for July 8 at the Garfield Administration Center.
