COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio State Highway Patrol is reminding motorists to stay alert and drive responsibly as the state enters what safety officials call the “100 Deadliest Days of Summer.”
The period between Memorial Day and Labor Day typically brings heavier traffic volumes, increased travel and a rise in serious and fatal crashes across Ohio roadways.
Governor Mike DeWine said warmer weather and more drivers on the road often contribute to a higher number of crashes during the summer months. Officials are encouraging motorists to buckle up, avoid distractions and remain focused behind the wheel.
According to OSHP data, more than 67,000 crashes occurred statewide during last year’s summer travel period. Those crashes included hundreds of fatal incidents that claimed lives across Ohio.
The summer season also marks the busiest time of year for motorcycle travel. State statistics show that more than half of all motorcycle-related crashes in 2025 occurred during the 100-day stretch between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
Troopers say they will increase patrol visibility throughout the summer in an effort to reduce dangerous driving behaviors and improve safety for everyone traveling Ohio’s roads.
