It’s Election Day!

Election Day has finally arrived on this November 5 and is in full swing.

In addition to statewide offices, some local governments have on the ballot elections for city council members or tax levies to fund public services.

It’s a sunny day in the Ohio Valley with record-breaking temperatures in the 80s predicted. So go out and vote!

Both Ohio and West Virginia polling locations close at 7:30 tonight.

Demolition of former Wheeling Inn more than halfway complete

WHEELING, W.Va. – Wheeling Gateway Center Project officials report that demolition is progressing on schedule, with approximately 60% of the former Wheeling Inn building now demolished.

The Raze company crew is completing the work. They are being careful to remove debris to avoid issues with the Wheeling Suspension Bridge and Wheeling Heritage Trail. Raze believes demolition will be safer and potentially faster if they begin to “crunch down” the multi-story section of the building along Main Street.

To better accommodate the work, barriers and fencing will extend into the lane nearest the site (by the bridge) on Main Street. At times, flagging personnel may temporarily halt traffic to ensure safe passage for trucks removing debris. Sidewalks around the perimeter of the site will be closed to pedestrians, who are encouraged to use the sidewalks on the opposite side of Main Street.

The takedown of this section will be carefully planned to ensure all debris remains contained within the site and clear of the bridge’s suspension cables, which are anchored into 10th Street.

The site will house the future Wheeling Gateway Visitors & Heritage Center.

Local man lands in jail following alleged weekend fleeing incident

WHEELING, W.Va. –  Wheeling Police officers arrested a local man who now faces several charges after a fleeing incident over the weekend.

Around 7:37 p.m., Sunday, officers initiated a traffic stop around South York and Zane Streets on Wheeling Island.

When the officer approached the car, they smelled an odor of narcotics. Police then searched the vehicle as well as the driver and passenger. The passenger allegedly began acting suspiciously and allegedly fled on foot from officers when being searched.

During the foot chase, the passenger allegedly resisted arrest and struck the officer several times during the altercation.

Once in custody, the suspect, identified as 29-year-old Treyvon Markelle Montgomery of Wheeling, reportedly had several grams of fentanyl, methamphetamine, crack cocaine, marijuana and an unknown substance on him.

Montgomery is charged with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, battery on an officer and fleeing.

At the time of his arrest, Montgomery was out on bond from a prior unrelated incident. He was taken to the Northern Regional Jail by WPD where he currently resides.

Auto dealership makes the Christmas season brighter for veterans

ST. CLAIRSVILLE, Ohio – Robert Thomas, Vice President of Thomas Auto Centers in St. Clairsville, said humility and gratitude inspired him to found a program to help veterans and their families during the Christmas season.

Thomas and his wife Robin started a Military Freedom Tree in 2012 just for veterans in need and their families. Thomas said they helped just three families that first year and now help around 32 families in the Ohio Valley area, mostly in Ohio and in West Virginia. He said one of the first families included the parents, five children and a service dog. The family was living on only $1,500 per month.

I feel pretty humble being in this building. without our veterans nothing we have would be possible. You know, it’s right around Christmas time in October, November, then you hear all the ads for kids and shoes and stuff like that. My wife and I talked about. She jumped on board with me, so we created a Freedom Tree. She’s a big part of it.

Robert Thomas, Vice President of Thomas Auto Centers

Thomas buys around 20,000 Walmart gift cards each year for the veterans and their families. He said each person receives a $100 gift card and that allows them to buy whatever they want, whether it’s clothes and toiletries, or even prescriptions. He buys the cards through St. Mary’s School in St. Clairsville through their scrip program, so the school benefits from the purchase also.

But they don’t stop with gift cards. The families receive toys for the kids and some of Thomas’s customers donate quilts. Others donate wooden trains and bicycles. Thomas says the kids ages 13 to 17 are most in need of gifts since they are often overlooked due to people focusing on little kids. Thomas suggested makeup kits and science project toys for the adolescent age group. They avoid buying clothes since they do not ask for sizes.

Community groups play a big role in the Military Freedom Tree. Legion Riders Post 366 from Flushing presented a check for $10,000 to the project from their poker run.

JoAnn Jones and other artists will perform on Dec. 7 at the Capitol Theatre in Wheeling where the Military Freedom Tree will be featured.

Thomas said others refer the veterans to him. Most vets are very proud and do not want to ask for help, he explained.

If you are interested in donating to the Military Freedom Tree or referring a veteran, call Thomas at (740) 695-0452 or visit the Thomas Auto website at https://www.thomasautocenters.com/

The deadline to donate is Dec. 10.

Journalist faces roadblocks to voting in Belmont County, Ohio…twice

BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio – Exercising your right to vote in Belmont County, Ohio can be a bit tricky. At least that was my experience.

I am Karen Fatula, News Director for River News Network, and my early voting experience Friday, Nov. 1 was difficult.

I arrived at the Belmont County Board of Elections in St. Clairsville around 8:45 a.m. with my absentee ballot and was met by a woman at the entrance who told me to deposit my ballot in the drop box. I explained that I did not want to use the absentee ballot or the drop box and wanted to vote in person. She directed me to talk to a woman at the counter behind the window.

I explained to the second woman that I wanted to vote in person. She told me I could not do that and directed me to fill out my ballot at a card table in the public lobby. I declined. She insisted that I had to use the ballot I had. I told her to “forget it” and left with my ballot.

I decided to vote in person instead of using the absentee ballot since it was a late date to mail it. Also, I wanted to see my ballot processed through the tabulator machine. Some people call this hybrid voting. I did not think this would be an issue, but the staffers at the Belmont County Board of Elections thought it was.

Undeterred by their rejection, I called the Ohio Secretary of State and spoke with Jennifer Hutchinson, Director of Constituent Services. She assured me I had a right to new ballot and said the Belmont County Board of Elections staffer should have marked my absentee ballot as “spoiled” and permitted me to vote in person, in a private setting, with a new ballot.

Later that morning, Aaron Moore, Director of the Belmont County Board of Elections, phoned me to apologize. He said I could vote in person with a new ballot. He said he would address his staff about spoiled ballots but added that this did not happen often. He was professional and sincere in his apology. I invited him to discuss the issue on the “Dimitri: Live & Dangerously Local!” show Monday morning but he declined since he said he would be busy with elections preparations. I requested that he submit a statement on spoiled ballots but have not yet received one as of Monday afternoon.

Encouraged by Moore’s assurance I could vote in person, I returned to the Belmont County Board of Elections Friday afternoon around 2 p.m. Unfortunately, my experience was worse than the morning. I was greeted by an older woman who later admitted her name was Cindy. She refused to identify herself when I asked at first.

Like her morning counterpart, Cindy told me to deposit my ballot in the drop box and when I declined, she told me to go into another room and fill it out. I told her I wanted to vote in person and spoil the absentee ballot. She seemed agitated and told me to stand in line for the official at the counter, which I did.

At the counter, I finally met a competent worker who spoiled my absentee ballot and provided me with a new one without hesitation, questioning or deterrence. Finally, I was able to vote.

When I left the Belmont County Board of Elections, I contacted Hutchinson at the Ohio Secretary of State’s Office to report that I voted, but had to deal with another confused worker. She was happy I voted and assured me that the Belmont County Board of Elections staff needed “additional training” and that she notified Director Moore. She thanked me for my report and perseverance.

How many other Belmont County voters were deterred from voting due to poorly trained staff? Hopefully, the staff can receive the information they need to ensure future elections run smoothly. Voting shouldn’t be this hard.

River News Network will follow up on the election process.

Don’t Wait! Saturday is the Final Day to Apply for FEMA Assistance

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Saturday is the final day for residents in Boone, Hancock, Kanawha, Marshall, Ohio, Roane, Wetzel and Wood counties to apply for FEMA Assistance if they had damages during the April 11-12, 2024, storms, floods, and landslides.

FEMA released the following statement Thursday:

THE DEADLINE TO APPLY IS SATURDAY, NOV. 2, 2024.

FEMA assistance for individuals and families affected by the flooding can cover home repairs, personal property losses and other disaster-related needs not covered by insurance.

The easiest way to apply for FEMA assistance is online at DisasterAssistance.gov or by phone at 800-621-3362. The toll-free telephone line operates from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., seven days a week. If you use a relay service, such as video relay service (VRS), captioned telephone service or others, give FEMA the number for that service.

Saturday, Nov. 2, 2024, is also the final deadline to apply for a U.S. Small Business Administration disaster loan.

Applicants can apply online at sba.gov/disaster, call SBA’s Customer Service Center at (800) 659-2955, or email disastercustomerservice@sba.gov for more information on SBA disaster assistance. For people who are deaf, hard of hearing, or have a speech disability, please dial 7-1-1 to access telecommunications relay service.
