Less cars, more stop signs in Steubenville?

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio — With less vehicle traffic in Steubenville, city officials are considering turning off traffic signals at eight intersections in the city, replacing them with four-way stop signs.

The proposed overhaul of the downtown traffic system comes as officials continue discussions regarding the rebuilding of the Market Street Bridge.

Under the proposal, traffic lights at intersections including Adams, Market, Washington, 3rd Street, 4th Street, and 7th Street—as well as two signals on 5th Street—would be replaced with four-way stop signs.

A presentation outlining the plan is expected to be delivered to the city council soon, with an upcoming meeting anticipated in April.

As the city considers these changes, officials are weighing the costs and potential benefits of transforming the traffic landscape downtown while ensuring safety and efficient flow for residents and visitors alike.

Residents are invited to share their thoughts and concerns as the plan moves forward.
