Local sobriety checkpoint scheduled tonight

WHEELING, W.Va. — The West Virginia State Police (WVSP) will be conducting a sobriety checkpoint this evening in the Elm Grove area of Wheeling.

The checkpoint will be located on U.S. Route 40 (National Road), near Lumber Avenue, and will run from 6 p.m. until midnight.

The operation is part of a statewide effort to combat impaired driving and enhance roadway safety. State Police officials say the checkpoint aims to deter individuals from driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, particularly in Ohio County.

During the checkpoint, drivers will be stopped briefly by troopers, who will request a driver’s license, vehicle registration, and proof of insurance. Officers will also be alert for signs of impairment, such as the smell of alcohol, slurred speech, or bloodshot eyes.

If impairment is suspected, officers may conduct further testing, including field sobriety tests or a breathalyzer. In certain cases, if reasonable suspicion arises, a vehicle search may also be carried out.

Authorities are urging drivers to plan ahead if they intend to drink, by using a designated driver or arranging for alternative transportation. The WVSP stresses that these checkpoints are vital in reducing traffic-related injuries and fatalities linked to impaired driving.

Motorists traveling through the area this evening should expect delays and are advised to drive cautiously.
