Ohio Property Tax Working Group Nears Report, Advocates Push for Full Abolition

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A property tax working group appointed by Governor Mike DeWine is finalizing ideas for its report, due to the governor in less than a week.

So far, the group has reached consensus that emergency levies for school districts should only be implemented if an auditor determines the district is in fiscal emergency, watch, or caution. Any such levies would remain in effect for no more than five years with no option for renewal.

Meanwhile, the public interest group Ax Ohio Tax is pushing a more permanent approach: abolishing property taxes entirely through a statewide constitutional amendment. River News is hosting local petition signing sites today (Wednesday) gathering signatures from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Belmont County at 3200 Guernsey Street in Bellaire and at the Fort Steuben Mall in Steubenville in Jefferson County.
