The Ohio Valley is mourning one of its greatest sports heroes, Bill Mazeroski, who passed away Friday at the age of 89.
Mazeroski, born Sept. 5, 1936, attended the former Warren Consolidated High School in Tiltonsville, Ohio, and signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates upon graduation in 1954.
Mazeroski etched his name into baseball history with a single swing of the bat for the Pittsburgh Pirates. His walk-off home run in Game 7 of the 1960 World Series remains one of the most iconic moments in Major League Baseball history, delivering a world championship to Pittsburgh and unforgettable joy to fans across the region.
A defensive standout at second base, Mazeroski spent his entire 17-year Major League career with the Pirates. Revered not only for his clutch heroics but for his steady glove and humble roots, he was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2001.
Mazeroski’s legacy endures in the Ohio Valley and far beyond.
