Local Man Accused of Stealing $20,000 from Church Headed to Trial

COLUMBIANA COUNTY, Ohio — Richard Carter of Bloomingdale is accused of stealing more than $20,000 from Bible Baptist Church in Wellsville and will soon stand trial in Columbiana County for this and other alleged financial crimes.

On Monday, Columbiana County Court of Common Pleas Judge Megan Bickerton denied Carter’s request to enter an intervention program in lieu of conviction and ordered him to stand trial on June 24.

Prosecutors say Carter’s alleged financial crimes date back to 2022. The allegations include depriving two people of more than $13,000, stealing more than $18,000 from a woman, and stealing more than $20,000 from the Wellsville church.

Carter’s attorney said he is paying $1,000 per month in restitution and is participating in an intervention program in Jefferson County.

Judge Bickerton denied Carter’s request to use the intervention program to avoid trial, citing his prior criminal history, including felony convictions. Authorities also said he has an outstanding warrant in West Virginia.
