Bill Could Extend Time for Ohio Murder Trials

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio Governor Mike DeWine currently has Senate Bill 295 on his desk. If signed into law, the bill would allow the state up to three years to restore a defendant to mental competency for trial in cases involving potential life sentences, as well as aggravated murder or murder charges, which could prolong the time serious criminal cases like murder could take to go to trial.

Supporters say the bill provides more time for proper evaluation and treatment, while critics raise concerns about delays in the justice process.
