Wheeling to Host Community Plein Air Art Event for America 250 Celebration

Artists from across the region will gather in Wheeling on June 20 for “Main Street to Mountains: A Wheeling Portrait,” a community-driven plein air art experience and juried exhibition created as part of the city’s America 250 celebration.

The event invites artists of all skill levels to paint live at locations throughout Wheeling, capturing the city’s landscapes, architecture, people and character. Featured painting locations include Heritage Port, Centre Market, Wheeling Park and Oglebay Park.

Organizers say the project is designed to connect local identity with the national America 250 milestone while supporting working artists and encouraging public participation.

Artwork created during the plein air experience, along with additional public submissions, will be featured in a juried exhibition at the Artisan Center. The exhibition will remain on display throughout the summer.

Artist registration is open from April 1 through June 5. The registration fee is $25 and includes a boxed lunch. All plein air works will be eligible for exhibition awards.

Members of the public are also invited to attend and watch artists paint throughout the city on June 20. An information tent will be located at Heritage Port from 7 a.m. to noon, where visitors can pick up maps
