PINEVILLE, W.Va. — Core Natural Resources has issued WARN notices to approximately 200 coal miners in Wyoming County, signaling plans to lay off workers by August 1, according to Metro News.
The layoffs will impact employees at the Itmann No. 5 Mine and the nearby Itmann Coal Preparation Plant. The company attributed the decision to challenging market and economic conditions affecting the coal industry.
Under federal law, employers are required to provide at least 60 days’ notice before implementing mass layoffs. The notice from Core Natural Resources meets this requirement, as it prepares to potentially idle part or all of its operations at the two Wyoming County sites.
The announcement comes amid broader concerns about the coal industry’s stability, with layoffs occurring in other areas. Industry experts say the mining industry is seeing hundreds of layoffs.
Health advocates have also noted the need for medical screenings for black lung and other conditions and support programs for miners facing job displacement.
Core Natural Resources was established earlier this year through the merger of major coal producers Arch and Consol.
