Protest Planned in Moundsville Over ICE Detentions at Northern Regional Jail

MOUNDSVILLE, W.Va. — Organizers are planning a protest Saturday in Moundsville against the detention of immigrants by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement at Northern Regional Jail, according to a social media post by the West Virginia Mountain Party.

The demonstration, organized by the West Virginia Mountain Party, West Virginia Fights Back and Bluejay Rising, aims to show solidarity with immigrant populations in the region, organizers said. Participants plan to gather Saturday, August 16 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the corner of Lafayette Avenue and 12th Street in Moundsville.

The protest comes months after Gov. Patrick Morrisey signed an executive order directing the state Department of Homeland Security, the West Virginia State Police and the Division of Corrections to fully cooperate with ICE and other federal law enforcement agencies.

Organizers have criticized the order, calling it hypocritical, and are demanding that ICE cease operations in the state. In a social media post, the Mountain Party wrote, “Immigrants are being detained at the Northern Regional Jail. We are gathering… to demand ICE out of West Virginia! No human is illegal!”
