UPMC Reportedly in Talks to Acquire Trinity Health System

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio — UPMC is negotiating to purchase Steubenville-based Trinity Health System in a deal that could significantly expand the Pittsburgh health giant’s regional footprint, according to a report in The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Trinity Health System in Steubenville is part of CommonSpirit Health, one of the largest nonprofit Catholic health systems in the United States

The potential acquisition, if finalized, would include three hospitals, two urgent care centers, and a behavioral health and physicians’ office building, the newspaper reported, citing sources familiar with the plans who were not authorized to speak publicly. Facilities involved in the discussions reportedly include Trinity Medical Center West, Trinity Medical Center East, Trinity Hospital Twin City in Dennison and the recently opened Trinity Health System St. Clairsville Neighborhood Hospital, which began operations in August.

Neither UPMC nor Trinity officials have publicly confirmed the negotiations.

The talks come as UPMC continues a rapid expansion across Pennsylvania and West Virginia. In July, the health system announced a joint venture with GoHealth Urgent Care to operate 81 urgent care clinics across the two states, strengthening its outpatient network. Trinity Health System operates urgent care clinics in Wintersville and Cadiz.

If completed, the Trinity deal would further UPMC’s reach into the Ohio Valley, positioning the health system to compete more aggressively in the region’s healthcare market.
