Unobstructed view of the historic Suspension Bridge revealed for first time in decades

WHEELING, W.Va. – Tipping Point Real Estate Development reported more big strides in their work on the future Wheeling Gateway Heritage Center.

Week 9 of the demolition of the former Wheeling Inn was a truly special one for the crew, project team and community, as a completely unobstructed view of the Historic Suspension Bridge was revealed.

Before Raze began infilling the old foundation, the project team paused to take in a unique perspective of the Ohio Valley. From this vantage point, the bridge loomed large in the foreground, offering an impressive view that hasn’t been appreciated in decades.

The moment was short-lived as Raze crews turned their attention to preparing the former Wheeling Inn’s slab-on-grade foundation. Drainage penetrations were created to ensure proper moisture flow, and the infill will be compacted in multiple layers to meet specifications set by architects, engineers, and environmental consultants.

Over the next week, passersby will see debris piles steadily diminish as Raze pushes forward through cold weather, rain, and snow to complete the foundation infill.

Enforcement of Wheeling Pedestrian and Vehicle Safety Ordinance to Begin on Jan. 1

WHEELING, W.Va. – The Wheeling Police Department will begin enforcing the city’s Pedestrian and Vehicle Safety Ordinance on Jan. 1, 2025, the department announced in a press release Wednesday.

The ordinance, passed at the Nov. 7, 2024 city council meeting, prohibits exchanging items from motorists to pedestrians on public roadways within city limits. The exchange is considered a public safety hazard and brings on the concern for crashes that could result in serious injury to either party.

The exchange of any item is prohibited at intersections, in medians, on shoulders, and in roadways. Pedestrians and non-motorists are also prohibited from standing or sitting in these areas unless they are lawfully crossing the street.

If violated, pedestrians and motorists could be subject to a citation. A first-time offense will result in a verbal warning; a second offense will result in a written warning; a third offense or more will result in a citation. The penalty can be up to and not more than $100 or community service.

A copy of the Pedestrian and Vehicle Safety Ordinance (No. 16134) can be viewed online at wheelingwv.gov/police.

Ringleader Sentenced to Jail in Ohio for Poaching 18-Point White-Tailed Deer

WILMINGTON, Ohio — An Ohio man will spend time in jail for his leading role in a high-profile case of deer poaching for which other defendants were previously sentenced, Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost announced.

Wilmington resident Christopher J. (“CJ”) Alexander, 28, of Clinton County, was sentenced to 90 days in jail and ordered to pay a combined $43,000 in penalties, restitution and court costs for the unlawful harvesting last year of an 18-point white-tailed deer, a trophy animal viewed as a valuable state natural resource.

“Hunting in Ohio is a time-honored tradition, and there is a proper way to be safe and successful,” Yost said. “When bad actors like these guys try to cheat the system, it ruins the reputation of Ohio’s respected sportsmen and women – I can’t stand for that.”

Aiding Alexander in his crimes were Corey and Zachary Haunert, who are brothers, and his sister, Kristina M. Alexander, all of whom entered plea agreements on Oct. 15 and have since been sentenced.

CJ Alexander’s sentencing today follows his Oct. 15 guilty plea to 14 charges, including one felony count each of theft by deception and tampering with evidence. The 12 other charges – all misdemeanors – included hunting violations, falsification, jacklighting and the sale of wildlife parts.

Specifically, CJ Alexander’s sentence requires him to:

  • Serve 180 days in jail, with 90 days suspended and the other 90 days served at the Star Community Justice Center before he can be eligible for work release. (His sentence also includes an up to 36-month suspended prison term that becomes active if community control is revoked.)
  • Serve five years of community control.
  • Pay $39,696.73 to the Ohio Wildlife Fund and $2,000 in restitution to KSE Sportsman Media, DBA Outdoor Sportsman Group-IM.
  • Pay $1,000 in restitution to the poaching hotline, a $1,000 wildlife fine and court costs.
  • Enter a four- to six-month community-based program through the Star Community Justice Center.
  • Write letters of apology to affected parties.
  • Forfeit all hunting-related property seized by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ Division of Wildlife as evidence.
  • Lose his hunting license for a minimum of 10 years; if full restitution is not paid by then, the license remains revoked until full payment is made.

Sentenced just ahead of Alexander today was Hillsboro resident Corey Haunert, 29,  who had pleaded guilty to six charges. He was sentenced to:

  • Three years of community control.
  • 90 days in jail (90 days suspended on the condition that he complete 200 hours of community service).
  • A three-year revocation of his hunting license.
  • Forfeiture of all hunting-related property seized as evidence.
  • A $500 wildlife fine, $500 in restitution to the poaching hotline and court costs.
  • An up to 18-month suspended prison term that may become active if his community control is revoked.

The cases of the two other defendants had previously been adjudicated.

Kristina Alexander, 37, of Blanchester, pleaded guilty to two charges and was sentenced to:

  • One year of monitored time supervision.
  • A suspended jail sentence of 60 days.
  • A $500 wildlife fine, $500 in restitution to the poaching hotline and court costs.

Zachary Haunert, 31, of Lebanon, pleaded guilty to one charge and was sentenced to:

  • One year of monitored time supervision.

Wheeling Police welcome new K9 officer

WHEELING, W.Va. – The Wheeling Police Department’s K9 Unit formally introduced a new member this week. K9 Sheik is a 2-year-old Belgian Malinois trained in narcotics detection and suspect tracking/apprehension.

K9 Sheik, along with handler Officer Brandon Stanley recently spent several weeks training over the fall and getting acquainted with each other at Merry K9 Services in Norwich, Ohio. Sheik was trained in policing commands, and apprehension techniques and was presented with various illegal drug interaction scenarios.

Sheik joins current K9s Jericho and Virgil, who are also trained in narcotics detection, and Ozzy, who is trained in explosive detection. Her addition to the department now gives each of the four patrol shifts an assigned K9 officer.

Sheik was purchased through the city’s allotment of West Virginia opioid settlement funds.

Wheeling woman lands in jail following multi-state police pursuit

WHEELING, W.Va. –  A Wheeling woman landed in the West Virginia Northern Regional Jail after she allegedly fled from police during a multi-state traffic pursuit, according to the Wheeling Police Department.

Wheeling Police arrested 27-year-old Savana Dawn Gwynn of Wheeling. She is charged with fleeing, receiving and transferring stolen goods, being a fugitive from justice and a capias.

The incident began around 2 a.m., Sunday, when an officer patrolling Wheeling Island recognized a vehicle that had recently been reported stolen.

The driver of the stolen vehicle allegedly made various traffic violations, failed to adhere to the officer’s attempt to make a traffic stop, and sped away, fleeing into Ohio.

The suspect allegedly led police on a chase on I-70 West to Exit 220 in Ohio and onto various local roadways. The Ohio Highway Patrol located the vehicle and pursued it back into West Virginia on I-470. The chase ended in the area of 27th and Main Streets in South Wheeling.

Gwynn was taken to the Northern Regional Jail by Wheeling Police, where she remains as of Tuesday morning.

Charges are pending against a second occupant of the vehicle.
