WHEELING, W.Va. — The Wheeling Police Department will honor fallen officers during its 12th annual Law Enforcement Memorial, scheduled for Monday, May 12 at 6 p.m. at Heritage Port in downtown Wheeling.
The memorial pays tribute to law enforcement officers locally and across the country who have died in the line of duty. In the case of inclement weather or high water, the event will be moved indoors to WesBanco Arena.
This year’s keynote speaker is Ohio County Prosecuting Attorney Shawn R. Turak, who was sworn into office on January 1, 2025. Turak has served in the prosecutor’s office since 2002 and brings more than two decades of legal experience to the role.
The ceremony will include a wreath presentation, a 21-gun salute by the Wheeling Police Department Honor Guard, the playing of “Taps” and ceremonial music by local musician Gage Joseph.
The annual memorial coincides with National Police Week, which is recognized each May. National Peace Officers Memorial Day, held on May 15, honors officers who have died or become disabled in the line of duty.
Since its founding over 219 years ago, the Wheeling Police Department has lost nine officers in the line of duty. Nationally, 165 officers were killed in the line of duty in 2024.
