WHEELING, W.Va. – The Wheeling Fire Department responded to a house fire on Ohio Street on Wheeling Island just before 8 p.m. Thursday, amid a severe thunderstorm.
Firefighters arrived to find flames and smoke coming from the roof of the home. Crews were able to rescue several dogs from the house. However, the fire caused the roof and side of the structure to collapse, rendering the house a total loss.
No injuries to the occupants or firefighters were reported.
The Wheeling Fire Department, with assistance from the Cumberland Trail Fire Department of St. Clairsville, Ohio, fought the blaze for about 90 minutes before it was brought under control.
A second alarm was called to provide additional resources.
Fire investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire.
