COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost on Friday certified two proposed constitutional amendments that could go before voters — one to remove the state’s ban on same-sex marriage and another to prohibit government discrimination based on a range of protected attributes.
The proposals, submitted by the advocacy group Ohio Equal Rights, would separately address marriage equality and anti-discrimination protections. One measure would repeal language in the state constitution stating that “only a union between one man and one woman may be a marriage valid in or recognized by this state and its political subdivisions.”
The second amendment would bar state and local governments from discriminating on the basis of race, sex, pregnancy status, sexual orientation, disability and other attributes.
Both campaigns must collect roughly 415,000 valid signatures from Ohio voters to qualify for a statewide ballot.
