Ohio Deputies Wrangle 100-Pound Australian Escape Artist

GUERNSEY COUNTY, Ohio — Deputies at the Guernsey County Sheriff’s Office had an unusual chase Friday night when an emu, a large flightless bird native to Australia, decided to wander down Putney Ridge Road.

Deputies Leggett and A. Daymut spent about 45 minutes trying to corral the large, determined bird while dispatchers monitored the scene via live cruiser camera feeds. Drivers passing by were likely baffled by the sight of the flightless bird roaming the road.

The unusual pursuit came to an end when the emu’s owner arrived to reclaim their runaway animal, bringing the “chase” to a close. Sheriff’s officials say it was just another night on the job in rural Ohio, where deputies can expect anything — even a 100-pound bird on the loose.
