WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. — A group of students from West Liberty University recently stepped out of the classroom and into one of the biggest sporting events in the country, gaining hands-on experience at the 2026 NFL Draft in Pittsburgh.
The students, representing multiple programs within the university, were selected to participate in the NFL’s Teammates Program. The initiative connects students with real-world opportunities by placing them directly into event operations at major league functions.
During their time at the draft, the group worked behind the scenes in several key areas. Their responsibilities included assisting with guest services, helping manage fan engagement activities, supporting interactive experiences like the Play 60 zone, and working within premium areas such as the NFL+ Lounge. They also contributed to activations tied to major corporate partners.
Faculty leaders say the experience gave students more than just a behind-the-scenes look — it provided a fast-paced environment where they could apply what they’ve learned in real time.
“These types of opportunities allow students to bridge the gap between academics and the professional world,” a university representative noted. “They weren’t just observing — they were actively contributing to the success of a national event.”
Beyond daily operations, students were also able to network with industry professionals, including NFL staff and event coordinators. That exposure offers valuable insight into careers in sports management, marketing, and event production.
Participants came from a variety of academic backgrounds, including sport management, marketing, graphic design, and physical education, highlighting the diverse skill sets needed to execute a large-scale event like the NFL Draft.
University officials say experiences like this continue to play a key role in preparing students for future careers, helping them build confidence, connections, and practical knowledge in competitive industries.
